Shutdown, Day 3 (October 3, 2025)

ree

The partial government shutdown will last at least through the weekend as the Senate does not plan additional votes to end it after today’s session and the House remains on recess.

Federal programs and activities – including the all-important jobs report – are starting to feel the effects of the stoppage. Even as party leaders sharpen their rhetoric, a small but influential coterie of Hill lawmakers are looking for a way out.

Below is a roundup of news about the shutdown.

Senators will try again to reopen the federal government with votes on funding bills scheduled on Friday, as the shutdown stretches into its third day. Behind the scenes, lawmakers from both political parties are having informal discussions to craft a deal that could get enough Democrats to support a funding measure.

The absence of the Labor Department’s monthly jobs report, which was scheduled to be released Friday morning, is the first casualty in what is likely to be a string of delayed or missed economic data.

The federal shutdown won't impact benefits from major programs such as Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. But one of the first things that could get hit is the nutrition assistance that many pregnant women and new parents depend on.

New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen has emerged as a central player in the bipartisan back-channeling that has ramped up this week as congressional leaders and President Donald Trump remain locked in a bitter stalemate.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune isn’t endorsing the slash-and-burn campaign White House budget director Russ Vought has planned for the federal government during the pending shutdown. But he says Democrats have no one to blame for it but themselves.

In the first hours of the shutdown, President Donald Trump has taken a scalpel to federal projects backed by Democrats. But so far, he has held back from unleashing a wrecking ball across the federal government, underscoring the political tightrope he’s walking in the first funding lapse of his second term: How to wreak maximum pain on Democrats without angering Republican allies.

Vice President JD Vance has emerged as President Donald Trump’s lead attack dog on the government shutdown as some Democrats lambaste what they see as a lack of White House leadership.
